  Academic Programs
  The total program is divided into four semesters over a period of 24-months. The first semester core courses are common to all specializations, and the other three semesters are specific to the respective specializations. A number of elective courses are offered from the second semester onwards. Various field-based planning exercises or projects will also be undertaken during the first three semesters. The last semester will have an independent research-/project-oriented work to be undertaken by the students leading to dissertation. Successful completion of the dissertation is an integral part of the two-year program.
   
 
PLANNING LABORATORIES (for all courses)
Area Planning: Techniques in area planning related to layout; sub-division of plots; utilities and financing through actual applications.
Rural Development: Techniques in socio-economic analysis and institutional framework for planning.
 
CORE COURSES (for all courses)
Evolution of Planning: Changing thoughts and practices of planning across nations, early influences in western and colonial settings; garden city; city beautiful-neighborhood idea; urban renewal; theories of planning and empiricism; emerging issues in housing policies; land; finance and privatization, globalization and urban development.
Land Use Planning Theories and Techniques: Land use planning theories and techniques; allocation, location and intensity of activities over land; relationships between various activities are covered.
Housing: Evolution of housing policies in developing countries. Self-help and support policies for housing; introduction to housing need; demand and supply processes; emerging issues in housing policies; land finance and privatization.
Social Analysis for Planners: Sociological concepts and theories for planning; theories of urbanization; neighborhood and urban community; research methods for socio-economic analysis.
Economic Analysis for Planners: Basic concepts in micro and macroeconomics; Changing trends and economic concepts in development economics, poverty and development; economic planning in India.
Environmental Planning: Basic concepts of ecology; components of environment; principles of environmental planning; issues related to use and management of resources; environmental concerns related to development; environmental degradation; pollution control and evaluation of energy resources.
Quantitative Research Methods: Sources of various statistical information in India; data collection and presentation methods; time series data analyses; index numbers; population projection methods; simple descriptive statistics, probability and sampling; simple and multiple regression and correlation; measures of association and hypotheses testing; and
Transportation Planning: Overview of transportation planning process; transportation planning process and analytical models; planning and design of urban roads; transport problems in urban areas; mass transportation systems.
Project Planning, Appraisal, and Management: Theory and techniques of technical, financial and economic feasibility of projects and appraisal methods, project planning and management using decision analysis, PERT/CPM, and linear programming.Regional Planning: Concept of region, regionalisation, regional disparities, regional development theories, concepts and theories of settlement; urbanization patterns and theories; review of policies and program for settlement planning in India, district planning.
Regional Planning: Concept of region, regionalisation, regional disparities, regional development theories, concepts and theories of settlement; urbanization patterns and theories; review of policies and program for settlement planning in India, district planning.
Urban Infrastructure Planning: Urban infrastructure planning with an emphasis on water supply, drainage, solid waste management and road networks; their planning and management concepts.

DISSERATION– for all programs
The fourth semester is the dissertation semester where students undertake a time bound research study for six months. The students are encouraged to explore multi-disciplinary issues helping student to develop analytical skills, critical thinking while contributing towards the institute’s knowledge base.
