  Introduction
Urbanization is going to be the future of India. Urban systems will have to respond simultaneously to both the agenda of economic growth and of human development. Hence there is a need to expand the scope of urban development agenda to include all dimensions of human well-being. The Centre for Urban Equity (CUE) is an endeavour to advocate for a human-centred urban development paradigm based on the notion of equity. Such an approach to urbanization is extremely important in a rapidly transforming country India, which has large number of internal inequalities emanating from history, culture and society superimposed on a capital-driven economic growth model.

CEPT University imparts education and training on various aspects of human settlements design, planning, management and technological issues. It has significantly contributed to research on human settlements. It has been realised over time that CEPT University also has an important role in shaping appropriate national and local policies on human settlements. On this realization, CEPT University has decided to set up a dedicated Centre that would channelize her ongoing efforts towards debating and shaping policies for an equity-based paradigm on human settlements’ development. Centre for Urban Equity (CUE) at CEPT University is set up with the objective of undertaking research, training and advocacy, imparting education, creating a database and networking with organizations and individuals working on human settlements keeping the notion of equity at the centre. CUE would create awareness around the issues of urban equity among the CEPT students in particular.

Focus
The focus of the Centre is research, advocacy, training and capacity building and data documentation and dissemination on the paradigm, policies and processes of urban development, approached from the bottom-up perspective. It envisages that sound theoretical and applied research of internationally accepted standards would form the basis for the Centre’s activities. The Centre envisages possibility of affiliating well known scholars and practitioners working on issues of urban equity. It would provide possibilities of affiliations for the registered PhD students at CEPT University. The Centre will support young independent scholars across the Planning schools and universities in India for promoting sound research in the area of urban equity. CUE will network and collaborate with other Centres at CEPT University on as and when basis. It is envisaged that shortly the Centre will start a one year diploma programme and eventually start offering a two year’s degree programme, like other programmes at CEPT University. This Centre has begun as a Centre for Excellence of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and will continue to carry on this work.

Funding
The Centre is currently funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MHUPA), Government of India (GOI), under the latter’s scheme of setting up National Resource Centre (NRC) for research, developing training materials and capacity building on addressing urban poverty issues. The MHUPA, GOI, has announced that this NRC will be a Centre for Excellence on Urban Poverty Research. Besides these, the Centre is and will apply for project and activity funds.
